Somalia Launches Its First Digital Defense Association to Secure the Nation’s Cyber Future

Mogadishu, Somalia   01/07/2025

In a landmark move toward strengthening Somalia’s cyber resilience, the Somali Digital Defense Association (SDDA) has officially been launched, making history as the country’s first national digital defense association.

The SDDA aims to fill a critical gap in Somalia’s digital landscape by providing strategic leadership, cyber defense advocacy, awareness, and capacity building. Positioned at the intersection of technology and national security, the association is committed to empowering public institutions, private sector entities, and civil society with the tools and knowledge necessary to counter growing cyber threats.

“Somalia cannot afford to be left behind in the global race for cybersecurity readiness,” said Abdirahman Ali one of the founding members of SDDA. “This association marks the beginning of a more secure, more connected Somalia.”

Key Objectives:

  1. Enhance Cybersecurity Awareness and Technical Capacity
Deliver training, tools, and expertise to safeguard critical institutions and digital infrastructure.
  2. Support Inclusive and Safe Digital Development
Ensure that digitization benefits all citizens, especially youth, women, and vulnerable groups.
  3. Build National Cyber Resilience
Strengthen Somalia’s ability to prevent, detect, and recover from cyber threats.
  4. Facilitate Public-Private Sector Collaboration
Provide a neutral platform for collective problem-solving and secure innovation.
  5. Advance Digital Governance and Regulatory Frameworks
Help shape policy, standards, and practices for data protection, AI ethics, and national cybersecurity.

Regional Vision:

The launch of SDDA aligns with Somalia’s broader digital transformation agenda and its ambitions to become a leader in cybersecurity in the Horn of Africa. It also reflects a commitment to support initiatives like the Cyber Warfare Training Academy (CWTA) and efforts to harmonize cyber policies across the region.

National Impact:

As Somalia continues its rapid digitization of public services, financial systems, and communications, the need for an organized, professional, and community-driven cybersecurity body has never been more urgent. SDDA is expected to:

  • Host national forums on cybercrime, artificial intelligence, and online safety.
  • Advise policymakers on drafting cyber laws and digital sovereignty frameworks.
  • Lead incident response coordination and threat intelligence sharing.
